Scope and Content The School & The Institute, New Lanark, South Lanarkshire This village was founded in 1784 by David Dale and Richard Arkwright to spin cotton. Between 1799 and the late 1820s it was run by Robert Owen and partners, and then by the Walker Brothers until 1881, when it was bought by Birkmyre & Somerville, and later by the Gourock Ropework Co. This shows the two community buildings constructed by Robert Owen and his partners. In the centre is the New Institution for the Formation of Character, built 1809-16, and on the left part of the School for Children, opened in about 1816. The New Institution was built to provide facilities for the education and recreation of both children and adults, and the School had in its basement a public kitchen. When the mills closed in 1968 the New Institution housed the works canteen, with recreation rooms above. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
