Scope and Content Reed & Heddle Factory, Nos 105-11 John Street, Glasgow This works was established in 1866-7 by James Neilson & Son, reed makers. In 1872 the firm was known as the Patent Heddle Co, and was making heddles and reeds, and was also doubling cotton yarn, probably to make the heddles. This shows the back of the works, in Margaret Street, form the south-west. The red and white brick construction was typical of the 1860s, but in this case was confined to the back, the front being of sandstone ashlar. On the right are the halls of St Paul's Church. Reeds and heddles are parts of looms. Reeds are frames of parallel strips of stiff material between individual warp (longitudinal) threads pass, and are used after each pass of the shuttle to ensure even spacing of the warp (cross) threads. Heddles are frames used to raise and lower groups of warp threads. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
