Scope and Content Holm Foundry, No 147 Newlands Road, Glasgow This works was established in 1886 by G & J Weir, engineers, primarily to build their patent boiler feed pumps, used to force water into the high-pressure boilers which had supplanted low-pressure boilers in ships and on land since the 1860s. The works was subsequently greatly extended. This shows a four-storeyed, reinforced concrete block in Inverlair Avenue, constructed in 1913-4. It is seen in the process of being repainted. The left-hand half is in its condition as built, and the right-hand section has been repainted in the same style as the main offices in Newlands Road. Weirs have a history of innovation in engineering, and as a result this works is still in operation. During World War I it made aeroplanes. More recently it has developed as a general pump-making concern on a global scale. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
