Scope and Content Holm Foundry, No 147 Newlands Road, Glasgow This works was established in 1886 by G & J Weir, engineers, primarily to build their patent boiler feed pumps, used to force water into the high-pressure boilers which had supplanted low-pressure boilers in ships and on land since the 1860s. The works was subsequently greatly extended. This shows the single-storeyed engineering shops on either side of a central access road. These lie behind the multi-storeyed offices, and the 1930s amenity block, on Newlands Road. In the foreground is a weighbridge for weighing lorries entering and leaving the works. Weirs have a history of innovation in engineering, and as a result this works is still in operation. During World War I it made aeroplanes. More recently it has developed as a general pump-making concern on a global scale. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
