Scope and Content Holm Foundry, No 147 Newlands Road, Glasgow This works was established in 1886 by G & J Weir, engineers, primarily to build their patent boiler feed pumps, used to force water into the high-pressure boilers which had supplanted low-pressure boilers in ships and on land since the 1860s. The works was subsequently greatly extended. This shows part of the frontage of the works from the south-east, with the two main office blocks to the left. The farther one was built in 1912 of reinforced concrete, and the nearer one was added in the late 1940s, similar in external appearance, but steel-framed. Weirs have a history of innovation in engineering, and as a result this works is still in operation. During World War I it made aeroplanes. More recently it has developed as a general pump-making concern on a global scale. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
