Scope and Content Marischal College Courtroom, University of Aberdeen, Broad Street, Aberdeen Marischal College courtroom was designed by Alexander Marshall Mackenzie for the Court of Aberdeen University during a period of rapid expansion of the Marischal College site. The interior was photographed in 1906 by Harry Bedford Lemere. This magnificent wood-panelled room is lit by tall, Neo-Gothic windows which bear the shields of the first 12 University Rectors since 1860. The elaborate ceiling is decorated with 18 heraldic crests, recording the history of the university from 1495. Since the 19th century the students have had the right to elect a Rector to act as their ombudsman. The famous Rectorial Fights involve supporters of the rival candidates 'fighting for the standard' in a ritualised battle with weapons of flour and soot. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
