The hall was photographed in 1906 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The hall, designed as an examination hall, has, at its far end, a magnificent commemorative window which summarises, in pictorial form, the history of the college, and includes elements of the 17th-century heraldic ceiling of the old Marischal College. Dr Charles Mitchell founded a shipbuilding and engineering works in Newcastle. After Marischal College and King's College united in 1860 as the University of Aberdeen, he became one of the university's major benefactors, donating money for new buildings.
