Scope and Content Entrance Gate to Marischal College Extension Building, University of Aberdeen, Broad Street, Aberdeen The Marischal College extension building was designed by Alexander Marshall Mackenzie as part of Aberdeen University's programme of expansion in the early 20th century. The Broad Street entrance gate was photographed in 1906 by Harry Bedford Lemere. The crests above the gate record the history of the university, and are (left to right) those of Lord Strathcona (Chancellor, 1906), Old Aberdeen, Bishop Elphinstone, Aberdeen University, Earl Marischal, Aberdeen city and the benefactor, Charles Mitchell. Marischal College was founded in 1593 by the 5th Earl Marischal as a Protestant alternative to King's College, founded by Bishop Elphinstone in 1495. A rivalry existed between the two colleges until they united in 1860 as the University of Aberdeen. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
