Scope and Content Hall, Carlekemp House, Abbotsford Road, North Berwick, East Lothian Carlekemp, a country house designed in 1898 by the architect, John Kinross, in the style of a Tudor manor in the Cotswolds, was built for the paper manufacturer, James Craig. The interior was photographed c.1906 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The two-storeyed hall has its lower walls panelled in oak, and is overlooked by a gallery built over the entry from the front door. The fireplace is Jacobean in style, with a carved overmantel and flanking obelisks by Scott Morton & Company, Edinburgh. In the late 1890s, the hall in country houses was designed to be large enough to sit in, and its fire provided background warmth for the entire house. It often served as a sitting room where the men of the household could smoke in the company of ladies. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
