Scope and Content Entrance Front, Carlekemp House, Abbotsford Road, North Berwick, East Lothian Carlekemp House, designed in 1898 by the architect, John Kinross, for the papermaker, James Craig, stands in wooded grounds to the west of the harbour town of North Berwick. The house was photographed c.1906 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This long, two-storeyed house, is very much in the style of a Tudor manor in the Cotswolds. The entrance front is asymmetric, with a gable at each end, and another gable over the projecting entrance bay. The lower section (right) housed the servants. Carlekemp was the first of three Cotswold-style manor houses to be built in Abbotsford Road before World War I. The other two were Bunkerhill, commissioned by James Craig's brother from the architect, Robert Lorimer, and Westdunes. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
