Scope and Content Detail of railing and lamp holder at No 24 Castle Street, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway No 24 Castle Street is a five-bayed, two-storeyed house which forms part of a terrace of early 19th century houses designed by Robert Burn (1752-1815). They were built between 1806 and 1819 of smooth ashlar masonry, with arched doorways, fanlights and steps over a basement area. This shows the arched stone doorway with its pedimented surround. Steps over the basement area are protected by cast iron railings with spearhead tops. A curly wrought-iron arch spans the steps and holds a lamp to light the entrance. Elegant large terraced houses provided homes for wealthy families who wanted to live in the heart of a town. Terracing allows several houses to be built close together whilst maintaining private entrances to each home. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
