Scope and Content View of gatepost and gates at Woodlands House, Newbridge, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway Woodlands House was built in c.1815 to designs by architect Walter Newall (1780-1863). It is a large Regency-style two-storeyed mansion with two-bayed bows and a Ionic-columned porch. It was later converted to commercial use as the Embassy Hotel. This shows a cylindrical gate post with a carved stone cornucopia on top. The railings and the double gates are made of cast iron. Both the gates and the posts have been painted white. The cornucopia is a decorative motif consisting of a goat's horn filled to overflowing with corn and fruit, originating in Ancient Greece. It is the attribute of Ceres, the Goddess of agriculture and abundance, and of Amalthaea, the nurse of Zeus. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
