Scope and Content Detail of cornucopia on gate post of Woodlands House, Newbridge, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway Woodlands House was built c.1815 to designs by architect Walter Newall (1780-1863). It is a large Regency-style two-storeyed mansion with two-bayed bows and a Ionic-columned porch. It was later converted to commercial use as the Embassy Hotel. This shows a carved stone cornucopia which is one of the pair which decorate the gateposts. Part of the cast iron railings and gate can also be seen (left). The sculpture has been painted white and is crumbling at the front due to the effects of weathering. The cornucopia is a decorative motif consisting of a goat's horn filled to overflowing with corn and fruit, originating in Ancient Greece. It is the attribute of Ceres, the Goddess of agriculture and abundance, and of Amalthaea, the nurse of Zeus. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
