Scope and Content View of rear of Palmerston House, No 42 Terregles Street, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway Palmerston House, a three-bayed, two-storeyed villa, was built in the early 19th century. It is constructed from red sandstone ashlar masonry and is set back from the road behind stone gate piers and a low wall. This shows the rear of the house with a canted section (centre) which was designed to accommodate a stair. The dimensions of the window have been altered, and an extension added below. The slated roof would have once had a dormer detail over the stair bay. The extension below the bayed section was probably an early 20th century scullery addition, and is of brick. The lean-to extension (right) was probably also a service area. The windows at ground-floor level indicate the presence of cellar rooms. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
