Scope and Content Lews Castle, Stornoway, Lewis, Western Isles Lews Castle, a mansion built in a Tudor Gothic style and designed by Charles Wilson (1810-63), was begun in 1848 and finished in 1860. The main block is three storeys in height with battlemented towers. The castle faces Stornoway and is surrounded by a crenellated wall. The castle is set amongst wooded policies which cost £50,000 to establish. James Matheson (1796-1878), the owner of Lewis, for whom Lews Castle was built, firstly cleared the surrounding land of tenant crofters. He then took away the land which had been used by the people of Stornoway for the over-wintering of their stock, enclosed it and planted the trees seen here. Lewis and Harris are both parts of the same island, collectively known as 'the Long Island', which is the most northerly in the Outer Hebrides. Together they are about 95km in length and around 32km at the widest point. Most of Lewis is quite low-lying, whereas Harris is mountainous. Stornoway is situated on the east coast of Lewis and is the only major town in the Western Isles. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
