Scope and Content Detail of door to Palmerston House, No 42 Terregles House, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway Palmerston House, a three-bayed, two-storeyed villa, was built in the early 19th century. It is constructed from red sandstone ashlar masonry and is set back from the road behind stone gate piers and a low wall. This photograph shows the impressive front door to the house. Under an elliptical archway the white-painted window surrounds highlight the forms of the traceried fanlight and the flanking lancet windows. The window's pilasters frame a wooden panelled door. This doorway with its fine detail is a special feature of an otherwise quite plain farmhouse. The masonry is of red sandstone from the Locharbriggs quarry, which was exported all over Scotland and England in the late 19th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
