Scope and Content Upper Levels of the Great Hall, Mount Stuart House, Isle of Bute, Argyll & Bute The Great Hall of Mount Stuart, a majestic marble atrium designed for the 3rd Marquess of Bute, was built by the architect, Robert Rowand Anderson, between 1879 and 1903. Harry Bedford Lemere was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1904. The hall, lined with tiers of arcading embellished with coloured marble columns, has a row of white Carrara marble statues borne on the main columns at first-floor level. The vivid stained glass of the clerestory windows depicts the signs of the Zodiac. The vaulted ceiling is painted with Zodiacal figures and silver stars to represent the constellations. This astrological theme is continued in Lord Bute's bedroom where the ceiling depicts the planets positioned at the time of the 3rd Marquess's birth. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
