Scope and Content Grand Staircase, Mount Stuart House, Isle of Bute, Argyll & Bute Mount Stuart, seat of the Marquess of Bute, was built by the architect, Robert Rowand Anderson, between 1879 and 1903, to replace an earlier house destroyed by fire in 1877. This photograph of the Grand Staircase was taken in 1904 by Harry Bedford Lemere. The staircase, with steps of Carrara marble and balustrading in variegated marbles, rises to the arcaded gallery on the first floor. The vaulted ceiling, supported by a single marble column (left), is finished in plaster between ribs of Sicilian marble. The walls, hung with family portraits, were designed to be faced in alabaster and green Cipollino marble. They remain in their original plaster although the surfaces between the wall arches contain paintings of The Creation by the artist, H W Lonsdale. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
