Scope and Content Grand Staircase, Mount Stuart House, Isle of Bute, Argyll & Bute This photograph of the Grand Staircase of Mount Stuart House was taken in 1904 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The house, seat of the Marquess of Bute, was designed by the architect, Robert Rowand Anderson, in a palatial style. The staircase, with steps of Carrara marble and balustrading in variegated marbles, rises three flights from the Great Hall to the arcaded gallery on the first floor. In the well, a single marble column with ringed shafts supports the vaulted ceiling. The marble, supplied and fitted by Farmer & Brindley of London, ranges in colour from the pale grey Sicilian marble of the ribs of the vaulted ceiling to the bolder, variegated marbles of the balustrading and the rings on the shafts of Emperor's Red.
