Scope and Content Great Hall, Mount Stuart House, Isle of Bute, Argyll & Bute The Great Hall of Mount Stuart, designed by Robert Rowand Anderson, formed the centre of his plan for rebuilding the house after fire destroyed the original building in 1877. The photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, photographed the hall in 1904. The hall is a majestic marble atrium, with tiers of arcades forming 'circulation routes' at ground- and first-floor levels. The pointed arches of the ground-floor arcade are repeated on the upper floor, but with each bay now divided by a slender column. Rowan Anderson's Great Hall is clearly echoed in the entrance hall of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh, which he designed five years later. It took 20 years to finish, with marble supplied and fitted by Farmer & Brindley of London. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
