Scope and Content View of Charter House, Troqueer Road, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway Charter House was built c.1810 as a store for charters, which are documents regarding rights or privileges awarded to groups of people or to individuals. These probably related to the Burgh of Maxwelltown itself. This two-storeyed, three-bayed building was later converted to domestic use. This shows the front of the house with its painted ashlar masonry, simple windows without margins, and dormer windows to light the attic rooms. Steps oversail the basement area, which is protected by cast iron railings on a low stone wall. The Charter House is built on sloping ground, appearing single-storeyed from the front, whilst being two-storeyed to the rear. The house is in the Maxwelltown area of Dumfries, which was a separate Burgh of Barony from its creation in 1810 until 1928, when it became part of Dumfries. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
