Scope and Content Conservatory, Seafield, Doonfoot Road, Ayr, South Ayrshire Seafield, an Italianate mansion designed by the architect, Robert A Bryden of the Glasgow firm, Clarke & Bell, was built in 1888-9 for the engineer, Sir William Arrol. This photograph of the conservatory was taken in 1890 by Harry Bedford Lemere. The conservatory, lined by cast iron arched supports with decorative scrollwork, stretches southwards along the east wall of the house. It is lit by glass pendant electric light fittings, and its features include a fish pond and elegant fountain. The conservatory was a popular feature of large Victorian country houses. It provided not only a hothouse for the cultivation of ferns, aspidistras, and rare and exotic plants, but an indoor garden where exercise might be taken in inclement weather.
