Scope and Content Entrance Hall, Seafield, Doonfoot Road, Ayr, South Ayrshire (latterly Seafield Hospital for Sick Children) Seafield, an imposing Italianate villa designed in 1888-9 by Robert A Bryden of the Glasgow firm of architects, Clarke & Bell, was built for the engineer, Sir William Arrol. This photograph of the entrance hall was taken in 1890 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This sumptuous hall has a panelled and painted ceiling, decorated dado panelling, and a gilded frieze in a heavy embossed paper. It is lit by an unusual electric light fitting with swan necks hooked by decorative supports to the main stem. The double doors lead through to the inner hall. Sir William Arrol (1839-1913) started work in a cotton mill at the age of nine and rose to found his own engineering company. In the Victorian period of industrialisation, he was part of a new generation of 'nouveaux riches' who, in the architecture of their houses, advertised their achievements in tangible form.
