Scope and Content Boudoir, Seafield, Doonfoot Road, Ayr, South Ayrshire Seafield, an Italianate villa designed in 1888-9 by Robert A Bryden of the architects, Clarke & Bell, was built for the engineer, Sir William Arrol. This photograph of the boudoir was taken in 1890 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The room, with a cornice decorated with modillions and the Classical egg-and-dart motif, has a display of Japanese fans, and photographs and other ornaments arranged around the walls. A photograph of Sir William hangs over the fireplace. In larger country houses, in addition to the drawing room, the mistress of the house was likely to have a boudoir, a private sitting room. This is Mrs Arrol's private sanctum where her personal treasures and photographs were kept and displayed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
