Scope and Content Seafield, Doonfoot Road, Ayr, South Ayrshire Seafield, an imposing mansion designed by the architect, Robert A Bryden of Clarke & Bell, Glasgow, was built in 1888-9 for the engineer, Sir William Arrol. This view of the house, taken in 1890, is by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This rambling, two-storeyed villa is built in an Italianate style, with low-pitched roofs and a campanile-like tower. A circular turret adjoins the tower's north-west corner, and a long conservatory stretches to the south-east of the house. Sir William Arrol (1839-1913) rose from very humble origins to become an engineer and leading railway contractor, as well as the Liberal MP for South Ayrshire from 1892 to 1906. He bought the Seafield estate in 1885, and lived there until he died in 1913. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
