Scope and Content Seafield, Doonfoot Road, Ayr, South Ayrshire Seafield, a large and imposing mansion designed by the architect, Robert A Bryden of Clarke & Bell, Glasgow, was built 1888-9 for Sir William Arrol. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the house in 1890. This rambling, two-storeyed villa is built in an Italianate style, with low-pitched roofs and a four-storeyed campanile-like tower with Romanesque-style arcaded windows. The panel above the square-plan open porch bears the initials 'W A'. Sir William Arrol (1839-1913) was one of the great Victorian contracting engineers, specialising in structural steelwork and, in particular, bridge construction. His projects included the Forth Rail Bridge (1890) and the replacement Tay Bridge (1887). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
