Scope and Content Sitting Room, Seafield, Doonfoot Road, Ayr, South Ayrshire (latterly Seafield Hospital for Sick Children) Seafield, an imposing Italianate villa designed in 1888-9 by Robert A Bryden of the Glasgow firm of architects, Clarke & Bell, was built for the engineer, Sir William Arrol. This photograph of a sitting room in the house was taken in 1890 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This room, with an elegant coved ceiling, has a fireplace with an elaborate overmantel with open shelves and glazed cabinets for ornaments. Its design is similar to that of the sideboard (left) whose mirrored shelves display a few, carefully chosen objects d'art. The simple arrangement of ornaments suggests the style of the room may have been influenced by the Aesthetic Movement, a movement that believed that art should be reflected in every aspect of ornamented decoration. Popular decorative items included Japanese, Persian and Chinese vases and plates. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
