Scope and Content Bedroom, Seafield, Doonfoot Road, Ayr, South Ayrshire (latterly Seafield Hospital for Sick Children) Seafield, an imposing Italianate villa designed in 1888-9 by Robert A Bryden of the Glasgow architectural firm of Clarke & Bell, was built for the engineer, Sir William Arrol. This photograph of a bedroom of the house was taken in 1890 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This cottagey-style bedroom has a display of knick-knacks and Japanese fans. It has a boldly patterned floral carpet, chintz-covered chairs and a patterned wallpaper possibly inspired by the designer, William Morris. The wooden bedstead was the height of fashion in the 1890s. The fashion for Japanese curios and bric-a-brac such as prints, swords, silks, fans, masks and lacquer panels began in the 1860s, and by the 1890s had become very popular. Rooms often had fans arranged along the dado rail or displayed in an empty fireplace during the summer. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
