Scope and Content South Front, Fyvie Castle, Aberdeenshire The south front of Fyvie Castle, one of the finest examples of traditional Scottish architecture, was photographed in 1905 by the architectural photographer, Bedford Lemere. The castle, dating from the 13th century, was originally a royal stronghold. The front is flanked by the Meldrum Tower (left), the Preston Tower (right), with the Seton Tower forming a great arched entrance at the centre. Its fantasy façade of corbelled turrets and intricately carved dormer windows dates from the 16th century. The castle remained in royal hands until 1380 when it passed to Sir Henry Preston. It was enlarged between 1440 and 1500 by the Meldrums, and in 1596 sold to Alexander Seton, Earl of Dunfermline, who was responsible for the elaborate exterior decoration.
