Scope and Content Business Room, Leithen Lodge, Innerleithen, Scottish Borders Leithen Lodge, built in the early 19th century as a keeper's cottage, was remodelled in 1885-7 by the architect, Sydney Mitchell, for its owner, George Miller-Cunningham. The photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, photographed the interiors c.1890. The room has an early 18th-century style chimneypiece inlaid with Delft tiles, and a distinctively panelled door. It is clearly a masculine room, with dark furniture, and a stuffed fox's head and pictures of hunting scenes on the walls. The male domain of the house, often characterised by dark panelling and furniture, or armour, stuffed animal heads and antlers displayed on the walls, was where gentlemen had the opportunity of smoking or discussing business outside the company of ladies.
