Scope and Content Downstairs Sitting Room, Leithen Lodge, Innerleithen, Scottish Borders Leithen Lodge, situated in the valley of the Leithen Water, was built as a keeper's house. It was remodelled in 1885-7 by Sydney Mitchell who designed the interiors with Scottish Arts and Crafts details, and photographed c.1890 by Harry Bedford Lemere. This comfortable and relaxed sitting room is designed for everyday use. It is furnished with 18th-century style chairs and table, and a spinning wheel to promote the Arts and Crafts movement's ideas of using local skills and craftsmanship. The Arts and Crafts movement began in the second half of the 19th century, and sought to create new and more beautiful environments in which people might live and delight in fine craftsmanship which used intrinsically attractive building materials.
