Scope and Content Conservatory, Leithen Lodge, Innerleithen, Scottish Borders Leithen Lodge, built in the early 19th century, was originally a keeper's house on the Leithen Hopes estate. It was remodelled in 1885-7 by the architect, Sydney Mitchell, and the interior photographed c.1890 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This unusual cast iron and timber conservatory, built over the entrance loggia, gives access from the drawing room wing to the billiard room wing of the house. The roof windows have a geared mechanism for opening, and the plant staging (left) is heated. Mitchell enlarged and modernised the existing house by adding a new east wing. The whole of the interior was remodelled, and all of the principal rooms placed on the first floor, with a conservatory added as a link between the two wings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
