Scope and Content Quadrangle, City Chambers, No 80 George Square, Glasgow, looking north Glasgow's City Chambers were designed in a grandiose style by the architect, William Young, reflecting the city's wealth and importance in the late 19th century. The building was photographed c.1890 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The chambers were built around an inner quadrangle, with an elegant arched entrance on its north side (centre). The public rooms are all on the second floor, distinguished by an unbroken band of pedimented windows between coupled Ionic pilasters. The chambers were built as the headquarters of the council which served the city of Glasgow. They were formally opened by Queen Victoria in 1888, and in 1889, a 10-day public viewing of the building attracted over 400,000 people. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
