Scope and Content Long Gallery, Duntreath Castle, Strathblane, Stirling This photograph of the long gallery of Duntreath Castle was taken in 1898 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The castle, home of Sir Archibald Edmonstone, was extensively remodelled in 1890 by the architect, Sydney Mitchell. The long gallery, reached by a further short flight of stairs from the top of the grand staircase, continues the Jacobean theme from the floor below. The walls are hung with tapestries, and the barrel-vaulted ceiling is decorated with fleurs-de-lys. Mitchell remodelled the house on the lines of Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh, with a great sweep of state rooms on the first floor. He included a long gallery, a long narrow room traditionally used as a picture gallery and a meeting place for conversation. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
