Scope and Content Octagonal Salon (Ladies' Boudoir), the City Chambers, No 80 George Square, Glasgow The City Chambers, Glasgow, headquarters of the City Council, was designed with several large reception rooms for civic functions and large meetings. This photograph of the Octagonal Salon was taken in c.1890 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This eight-sided salon interconnects with both the Mahogany and Satinwood (seen here) reception rooms. It is elaborately decorated in silk damask, with a complement of matching furniture. Its dark amberwood was installed by Alexander Mackenzie & Company. The octagonal salon, in the north-west corner of the building, acts as an overflow room for both the Satinwood and Mahogany reception rooms. Its original use was that of a boudoir, a small private sitting room that was reserved exclusively for ladies. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
