Scope and Content View from east of Batterflatts, No 4 Polmaise Road, Stirling Batterflatts is a large Arts and Crafts villa, built in 1893 to designs by architect John Allan (practiced 1890-1914). Once the home of the Drummond family, it was used as a Council residential home from 1955 until c.1994 when it was divided into flats. This shows the main entrance front of the house with its red brickwork and half-timbered details. Some of the bricks have been cast to produce repeating patterns. A castellated four-storeyed tower rises above the asymmetrical façade. Large 19th-century houses required a large staff of servants to tend to the residents and their guests. Today's families seldom need to live or entertain on such a grand scale and such properties are often reused as hotels, flats and nursing homes. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
