Scope and Content Detail of cast-iron fireplace, Nos 17-19 High Street, Inverness This tenement block with shops below was built in c.1845 of smooth ashlar masonry. It features an ornamental bracketed balustrade and architraved windows. Modern shop fronts on the ground floor contrast sharply with the Victorian stonework above. This shows a fireplace in a flat above the shops. The simple wooden surround encloses a fine cast iron fireplace, heavily ornamented with foliate designs. The flanking ledges by the grate could be used to keep a kettle hot when taking tea in the room. This fireplace does not require these finely cast designs in order to function well. They are an example of the Victorian fashion for elaboration and enrichment of surfaces. 19th-century tastes required even the simplest objects to be heavily decorated.
