Scope and Content Detail of tiled fireplace in the dining room, No 21 Warriston Crescent, Edinburgh Warriston Crescent was built c.1830 and consists of the large, three-storeyed block of Nos 2, 3 and 4, and the two-storeyed, curved section of Nos 5-33. Warriston was laid out for development in 1807 by architect James Gillespie Graham (1777-1855). This photograph shows the tiled inner area of the dining room fireplace. The surround is of black marble, and encloses a charming, hand painted tile picture of farm workers and horses on a country lane. The gas fire replaces an earlier coal fire. This beautifully hand painted tile picture was completed in 1936 by artist Ann Connell. A mural of Malton in Yorkshire is also in this room. Connell, an Edinburgh artist, exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy between 1963 and 1966. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
