Scope and Content Detail of tiled floor in the hall of Grange House, No 22 York Road, Edinburgh Grange House was built c.1820, and is a two-storeyed, three-bayed house built in the Classical Italianate manner. It is constructed of fine ashlar masonry to the front, with a Doric portico and balcony. The rear and sides of the house are built of rubble. This photograph shows the floor of the hall with its richly patterned tiled surface. The tiles have been arranged to form a geometric design in buff, deep red, blue, black and white. A smaller design around the edges of the floor forms a border. These Minton/Hollins tiles were popular in Victorian hallways as they provide the richness and intricacy of an Oriental carpet, whilst being very hard wearing. The hall would be the first area a visitor would see, and was usually decorated to impress. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
