Scope and Content Detail of plasterwork ceiling in the drawing room of Grange House, No 22 York Road, Edinburgh Built c.1820, Grange House is a fine Classical Italianate villa, with Roman Doric portico and cast-iron balcony. It is built of smooth ashlar masonry to the front, and coursed rubble to the sides and rear of the house. This photograph shows part of the plasterwork in the drawing room. Curving lines, foliage and flowers form elaborate motifs in the corner of the ceiling, whilst a scrolling border continues the theme around the room. Decorative plasterwork adds greatly to the sense of opulence in 19th-century homes. Sections would be prepared in moulds and assembled into complicated designs on the ceiling. Most rooms in wealthy houses would have plasterwork ceilings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
