Scope and Content Detail of the paper frieze in the nursery of Grange House, No 22 York Road, Edinburgh Grange House was built c.1820, and is a fine two-storeyed, three-bayed Italianate villa. The façade features a Roman Doric columned portico with cast-iron balcony above. The frontage is built of smooth ashlar masonry, and the sides and rear of rubble. This shows the wavy-bordered nursery frieze which illustrates a rhyme repeated in the design, 'Blow Wind Blow'. This commercially printed paper replicates hand-tinted, woodblock prints with its pretty, pastoral imagery of windmills and cornfields. This border was probably applied in the inter-war years, and is a rare survival of an ephemeral decorative scheme. Nursery wallpapers are usually removed when a child grows up, and borders allow the quick updating of a room without complete redecoration. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
