Scope and Content Oblique aerial view of Piershill, Edinburgh The Piershill area of Edinburgh lies close to Holyrood Park, Parsons Green and Meadowbank. The huge complex of tenements known as Piershill Square West and Piershill Square East form a snaking line of housing close by the railway line. This aerial photograph shows the long lines of the Piershill tenements close by the curve of the railway line at the bottom of the picture. To the right can be seen part of Meadowbank stadium. Dunsapie Loch in Holyrood Park can be seen top right. The Piershill tenements, containing 342 dwellings, were built between 1937 and 1938. They were designed by Ebenezer MacRae (1881-1951), city architect, who was famous for his regeneration and reinterpretation of Scots vernacular architecture. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
