Scope and Content View from north-west of back court, Piershill Square West, Portobello Road, Edinburgh These Piershill tenements, containing 342 dwellings, were built 1937-8. They were designed by Ebenezer MacRae (1881-1951), city architect, who was famous for his regeneration and reinterpretation of Scots vernacular architecture. This photograph shows part of one square of tenements. The red communal doors lead to stairs to each block of flats. The tenements are covered in cream-painted harling with rubble dressings and vary from three to five storeys in height. These tenements were built on the site of barrack blocks, and reused the stone facings from the old buildings. They are a reinterpretation of the traditional tenement, a housing type more usually associated with the 19th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
