Scope and Content Detail of doorway, No 15 Piershill Square West, Portobello Road, Edinburgh These Piershill tenements were built in 1937-8 and form two tapering squares. They were designed by Ebenezer MacRae (1881-1951), city architect, who was famous for his regeneration and reinterpretation of Scots vernacular architecture. This photograph shows part of the tenements with railings and small front gardens. The ground floor and area above the arched doorway are covered in stone rubble, the rest is harled and painted cream. A gable at the wall-head highlights the entrance. These tenements were built on the site of barrack blocks, and reused the stone facings from the old buildings. They are a reinterpretation of the traditional tenement, a housing type more usually associated with the 19th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
