Scope and Content Hyde Park Locomotive Works, Flemington Street, Glasgow This works was founded in 1860 by Neilson & Co, whose previous works had been in Hydepark Street, Anderston. It was subsequently enlarged and partly rebuilt. Neilson, Reid & Co Ltd, by then the owners, became part of the North British Locomotive Co Ltd in 1903. This shows part of the frontage of the works to Flemington Street from the south-west. This tall block is the dining hall, constructed in 1898, and a pioneering provision at that time. Most factories did not have canteens until World War I. In the mid-1950s the North British Locomotive Co Ltd, which had been Europe's largest manufacturer of steam locomotives, turned to making diesel locomotives, and concentrated their manufacture at their Queen's Park Works, running down this works. The company failed in 1963, and this works was demolished in 1969. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
