Scope and Content Camp Coffee Works, Nos 77-81 Charlotte Street, Glasgow This factory was founded in 1891 by R Paterson, coffee essence manufacturer, to produce liquid coffee essence in bottles, under the brand name 'Camp Coffee'. This product was so successful that three large additions were made between 1893 and 1908, in Charlotte Street and Greendyke Street. This shows the east end of the factory, in Greendyke Street. The five-bayed building was added in 1908 to designs by W Baillie, architect. The chimney served the boiler house of the factory. The essence was probably made by percolating coffee, and concentrating it in a vacuum. Camp Coffee remained popular as a convenient quick beverage until powdered coffee extracts came on the market. These were more convenient than a liquid extract, and generally tasted more like 'real' coffee. The works closed in the 1970s and has been demolished and the site redeveloped.
