Scope and Content Roslin Colliery & Brick Works, Midlothian This colliery was sunk in 1901-3 by the Shotts Iron Co, and produced steam and house coal. There was a steam winding engine on the downcast shaft, built by Inglis & Co, Airdrie in 1912, and a unique hydraulic winder on the upcast shaft, by MacTaggart, Scott & Co and Beckett & Anderson Ltd. This shows the hydraulic winding engine on the upcast shaft. The three electric motors in the foreground drive hydraulic pumps delivering oil under pressure to the hydraulic motor on the axle of the winding drum. This was installed in about 1960, and was reckoned to be very slow. This colliery was closed in 1969, and immediately abandoned, the surface buildings being demolished. It was one of several pits in Midlothian and East Lothian owned by Lanarkshire iron-smelting companies. The engines were both scrapped. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
