Scope and Content Whaling Station, Bunaveneadar, Harris, Western Isles, from south-west This elevated view from the south-west is of the ruins of the whale meat cookeries. Presumably the whale meat was cooked before being processed into cattle and poultry food. On the east side of the cookeries there was a narrow-gauge railway probably for transporting the meat to another area of the station. The name Bunaveneadar, or Bunabhainneadar, is a rare example of a place name in Harris which has only Gaelic roots. It means 'mouth of the river which comes down between two groups of hills'. Lewis and Harris are both parts of the same island, collectively known as 'the Long Island', which is the most northerly in the Outer Hebrides. Together they are about 95km in length and around 32km at the widest point. Most of Lewis is quite low-lying, whereas Harris is mountainous. Bunaveneadar is situated on the west coast of Harris.
