Catalogue Number SC 684040

Scope and Content View from south-east of No 8 Dewar Place, Edinburgh Ebenezer MacRae (1881-1951), City Superintendent of Public Works from 1925-46, designed these stone tenements in 1940. He led campaigns for more tenement housing and criticised the building of cottages and bungalows in cities. This photograph shows the tenements on their corner site. The rough stonework and emphasised borders around the door and stair-windows highlight the communal stair close. The block has a flat roof and datestone inscribed '1940'. The datestone and rough stonework, and the stone-framed windows all suggest the architectural traditions of Scotland's past, especially the details found on tower houses. These design details suggest solidity and a sense of history in this block. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
