Scope and Content View from east of The Lane House, No 46a Dick Place, Edinburgh The Lane House was designed by architects William Kininmouth and Basil Spence in 1933. It is a two-storeyed, harled brick house in the International Modern style. A single storey extension was added to the north in 1953, and a studio built in 1961. This photograph shows the house with its contrasting sections of curves and angles. A large bow window of 13 panes of glass leads into the garden. Above this is a paved roof terrace. The windows have lintels made of exposed concrete. The house cost £500 to build in 1933, and each of the extensions in 1953 and 1961 cost the same amount. Originally, the walls were treated with two coats of whitewash, but this did not withstand the Scottish weather, and harling was used instead. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
